AO3 stories are usually long, chapter-based works. That structure is great for reading, but it can feel clunky for listening—especially if your app treats each chapter like a separate, manual step.
Here’s why many text-to-speech (TTS) apps don’t feel smooth for AO3:
They can’t listen directly from a website. Instead, they often require you to download an EPUB/PDF first.
Chapter switching breaks the flow. If you have to tap, switch, and reload every chapter, it stops feeling like an audiobook.
Offline behavior is unclear. Some apps play fine on Wi‑Fi but stop the moment you lose signal.
This method is designed for the way people actually consume AO3: long fics, many chapters, and lots of hands-free listening.
Open the fic on AO3 and copy the link to the work page (the main page for the story).
Open AI Listen and paste the AO3 link in the bar. The app will take you to the AO3 page so you can collect the story directly from the web.
On the AO3 page, tap Collect and Listen. AI Listen will begin importing the story.
Keep the app open until you see the confirmation message: Import successfully.
Once the import is done, tap Listen now to start listening immediately.
While listening, you can:
Jump to the chapter you want
Change voice styles
Adjust listening speed to match your preference

If you can’t import from the web in some cases, you can still listen offline using a more traditional route:
Download the fic from AO3 as an EPUB (usually best for listening) or PDF.
Save it to the iPhone Files app.
Import the file into a TTS reader.
This works, but it often feels more manual—especially when you want an uninterrupted, chapter-by-chapter audiobook experience.
Use this backup method when web import isn’t available; otherwise, web import is typically faster and better suited for continuous listening.
A few small settings can dramatically improve long-form listening:
Speed: 1.15×–1.25× is a good default for most fics.
Voice choice: pick a voice that stays clear at higher speeds.
Practical scenario presets:
Commute: 1.2×–1.3× speed, quick chapter jumping
Workout: 1.25×–1.35× speed, minimal interaction
Bedtime: 1.0×–1.1× speed, calmer voice
The best setup is the one that reduces “micro-taps.” For AO3, that usually means a reliable import, easy chapter navigation, and continuous playback that doesn’t force you to babysit the app.
Make sure you’re using the work page link (not a comment thread or a random chapter URL). Then try importing again.
Wait a bit longer and keep the app open. If the story is long, import can take time.
Re-copy the link from the main work page and re-import. AO3 navigation links can vary depending on where you copied the URL.
Confirm the story was fully imported and that you can open it from My Library. Offline listening works best after import is complete.
Debug in this order: correct link → import successfully → find it in My Library → then check playback settings.

AO3 offline listening becomes easy when the app is built for the job: web import, chapter navigation, and long-session playback that keeps going. If you want a hands-free way to listen to AO3 fics on iPhone without constant tapping and chapter switching, AI Listen is designed around that exact scenario.
